custom bathroom vanity
This bathroom is designed to be a "jewel box." The custom vanity looks like an antique piece of furniture, but it is actually a built-in cabinet. The impressive mirror with frame extends to the ceiling and is a one of a kind. The floor is limestone, laid on the diagonal and accented with granite mosaic tiles. In addition, the tub has been replaced with a glass enclosed shower for the illusion of more space.
The original footprint of the home stayed the same. Instead of building out, the house increased in size by going up. The slab and first floor structure remain basically the same. Windows and doors have been replaced to increase energy efficiency, and the original wood floors were recycled. The crown molding has been “beefed up” to add an element of formality to the entry and adjoining room.
The staircase is designed to take up as little space as possible. With a rounded edge, larger than normal molding, and wood risers stained to match the recycled wood flooring, the staircase becomes a stunning focal point from any room in the house. Also, the grand upstairs picture window with its beautiful tree-top view can be seen from the bottom flight of steps.
The “new” home exterior consists of the existing brick that has been refurbished, multi-colored flagstone from a quarry in Austin, and a new color for the siding that compliments both. As well, the new Fir wood columns and shutters received a two-tone hand rubbed stain. Fir was selected because it is reminiscent of the age of the home.
What began as a one-story 1950s ranch style home is now a traditional two-story celebration in green renovation. A floor plan was designed, then demolition was executed, recycled elements were restored, and the second floor was constructed to complete the project.
